The school was thrilled to welcome Athlone Town Mayor, Mr Frankie Keena and Director of Arcadia Retail Park, Mr Fiachra McLoughlin to the school. Our Lady’s Bower had two entries in the inaugural Arcadia Creative Climate Awards 2020 and were proud to receive their prize of a €200 voucher for B&Q, which will be used to develop the school’s green space.

The competition was run in conjunction with the Junior Mayor Initiative and tasked the students with submitting a planning proposal for the Arcadia Retail Park with sustainability and renewable energy to the fore.

The Brighter Future team of Amina Bashiru, Layo Olulana, Wendy Rasaki and Nuru Mbugua envisioned a botanical garden being developed, with a park and ride bike station also being located on the site. The Our Cadia team of Ashling McCarthy, Veena Dandu, Amirah Yusuf and Clare Reidy tapped into the noise energy created by the dual carriageway behind the retail park and the energy that could be created from constructing a dam on the River Shannon and erecting wind turbines in the area.

Well done to both teams and thank you to the organisers for running such a worthwhile competition. The Green Schools Committee are looking forward to getting suggestions from the Student Council as to how best to spend the prize money so as to benefit the environment and the school’s outside space.
