20180515_140202-1There was a great buzz in the school on Tuesday, 15 May as the final of the Bugler Shield senior debating competition took place.

Senior students assembled in the meeting room for a very serious debate for the Bugler Shield. The competition, hosted annually by the Alpha de Beta Society, is a very popular event on the Bower calendar since the shield was located in a press in the convent a few years ago.

Using debating skills honed during many a lunch time debate, all of the contestants performed convincingly as they argued for or against the motion not to allow big businesses to sponsor amateur sport. Proposing the motion were Rebecca Armstrong, Zainab Khan and Daniella Obikoya while the opposing speakers were Natasha Maimba, Chloe Gavin and Minahil Sarfraz.

Local politician Robert Troy was kind enough to adjudicate the competition and was impressed that the speakers acquitted themselves so well.

The winner of the shield for the best individual speaker was Natasha Maimba, while the proposition carried the motion.

The final Alpha de Beta debate of the year took place on Monday, 21 May where staff took on students to justify the importance of homework. The audience was fully engaged in this debate, voting to give victory to students arguing against the value of homework.
