BIPPSOn Saturday, September 21st teammates Hannah Dickie and Faith Greene travelled to Ballybunion to represent The Midlands U17s at this year’s Basketball Ireland Post Primary Schools Tournament. The girls play school and club basketball, Hannah with Athlone Basketball Club and Faith with Tullamore.

The pair took part in trials for the Midlands side before summer, which saw 35 players whittled down to a squad of just 12. Weekly summer training for the girls took place from August in Clonaslee in Co. Laois. Hannah said she was shocked to be selected as she is a year younger than most of her teammates. Faith was also surprised as she had been unsuccessful at last year’s trials. However, their commitment to their sport and dedication to training with both school and club is certainly evident from both girls and obviously paying off in terms of their skill.

The girls travelled to Kerry on Saturday 20th to squeeze in a light pre-tournament training session and Sunday saw them compete in three matches against teams from The North-West, South-West and South.

The team came away runners-up. The first of the three match was very close. The girls felt their side was good defensively and their shooting was very strong in the second and third match. It was great experience for both, as they were marking players from the Irish U16 and U18 teams. They really had to up their game. The physicality was intense. Unfortunately as a result, Faith had to sit out the 3rd game due to an ankle injury.

The girls are thrilled to have had the experience of playing at this level and are confident that their training with the Midlands side will really raise their game for both school and club. They both look forward to a possible call up to the U17 Irish Development Squad. Fingers crossed girls. The very best of luck.
