A plucky first year hockey team took to the field last Tuesday to contest the semi-final of the Blackmore Cup against old rivals Salerno from Galway. The fixture was a replay of the semi-final played in Dangan in early March. On that occasion a cracker of a goal from Lucy McMickan ensured a 1-1 draw and a second chance of a place in the finals. On this occasion great teamwork up front from Lucy McMickan and Saidbh Beirne stretched the Salerno defence, but the girls had no reward for their hard work. Just before the half-time whistle the Galway team scored. In the second half the Bower had plenty of opportunities to score with Anna McGann sending some great balls to the forwards. Despite great defending from Kerri-Ann Murtagh in the second half, Salerno secured their place in the final with a fast ball to the back of the net. The final score of 2-0 doesn’t reflect the closeness of the two sides nor the huge effort from the local team. Many thanks to Pat Fox who was referee on this occasion, and to the many parents who turned up to encourage the girls.
