Sixth year Lily Mannion was one of the eight black belts from the Athlone Taekwondo Academy who represented Ireland at the UITF World Taekwondo Championships in England in August. Ireland won the best overall country with a haul of 32 medals.

Lily made a huge contribution to the success of the Irish team, winning five medals in all, including a silver in the individual patterns section.

The commitment needed to compete at this level is immense. Training took place for up to 6 hours daily, rising to full time during the holidays. National squad training took place at weekends in Cork or Kerry and involved weights, cardio, drills and stretching.

Athletes also adhered to a very strict diet to maintain the weight they qualified for. However, Lily’s discipline and mental strenght has resulted in her success and her selection for the Irish team in the World Kickboxing Championships to be held in Crete in October.

We look forward to continued success for Lily!
