Sr AnnetteOur TY students are engaged these weeks in a series of workshops and activities concentrating on the very important issue of mental health education. Aware presents their ‘Beat the Blues’ programme in the school in early March and a group from the HSE is coming in to present a series of workshops to help students develop a healthy lifestyle to build resilience and well being. Yoga classes complement these workshops.

Sister Annette Farrell, an LSU sister working in Tanzania came in to talk to the girls about her work in Tanzania east Africa and to thank them for their support and fundraising. The class are organising a céilí with the first years to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge and this which will also be a fundraiser for Sr. Annette’s mission work. Mr Keating is currently preparing his class to work on their annual broadcast Craolachan Raidió on Athlone Community Radio. You can tune into this live broadcast on 14 March. This promises to be a very entertaining show with music song and chat as Gaeilge.ACR broadcast

Projects coming to fruition now include Junk Kouture, Young Environmentalist, Scifest and the Rotary Young Writer competition. Meanwhile twenty five students are having a workshop on Public Access to Law while they get ready for the National Mock Trials competition which will be held in the Criminal Courts of Justice on 21 April.

For those girls interested in a career in law enforcement there was a trip to the Garda in training unit in Westmanstown where the dog unit, the water unit and the mounted unit gave talks and displays. Other students will soon enjoy a drama workshop presented by well known actor and past pupil Olivia Caffrey while a visit from the Department of Foreign affairs with their ‘Diplomats in the Classroom’ presentation is also coming up soon. ceili3

Finally before their Easter break Dee Feary of Glasson pharmacy will give a presentation on skin care and the girls will also enjoy a trip to the RDS for the AIB ‘Future Sparks Festival’ .This inaugural event will involve inspirational career talks and discussion panels with speakers from areas including music, sport, business and tech.
