Bower students' success in National Seachtain na Gaeilge Competitions 2010
The results of the 2010 Seachtain na Gaeilge national competitions were announced on Wednesday the 28th of April. Many students from Our Lady’s Bower entered the competitions this year and five of them won substantial prizes.
Maeve Cooney was awarded first prize in the Secondary School Senior Poetry category and her classmate, Helen Hughes, won second prize. We wish them every success in their forthcoming exams and hope that their achievements will encourage more pupils to write poetry in Irish.
The Bower artists were busy at their easels during Seachtain na Gaeilge and produced many beautiful and imaginative pieces for the art competition. This competition was based on their visual interpretations of old Irish sayings or seanfhocail.
Jennifer Hynes, who is currently in Transition Year, created a very clever and topical poster based on the seanfhocal 'Ar scath a cheile a mhaireann na daoine' or 'No man is an island.' Her efforts were rewarded with first prize in her category. Alison Fagan (5th Year) produced a painting of a penguin guarding its little patch of ice
The youngest winner was Rebecca Daly who is in IU and she used the old cartoon favourite Bugs Bunny and his girlfriend to enlighten us as to the meaning of the seanfhocal 'An rud a lionas an tsuil, lionann se an croi' or 'What fills the eye, fills the heart.'
Well done to all of the students who entered Seachtain na Gaeilge competitions this year. We are already looking forward to Seachtain na Gaeilge 2011!
Young Bower Scientists excel at Athlone Sci-Fest
On Friday 23 April, students from all over the midlands headed in the blazing sunshine for Athlone Institute of Technology to present their findings, show off their work and dazzle judges in the 2010 Sci-Fest.
This is the 3rd year Sci-Fest has run, and it is getting bigger and better each year. From Our Lady’s Bower, 32 teams represented their school. Work had started months before, and the enthusiasm shown would have made any teacher proud of their students. Choosing a topic was not a problem for most, having to settle on a particular topic was an issue for some students, with most wanting to submit 2 or 3 projects.
The topics included 'What makes a potato floury?' investigated by Jane Tuohy and Orlaigh Sweeney to a very detailed model of the human eye, put together by Maedbh Hurst, Emma Sweeney and Karen Pillion. 'The Benefits of Brain Training Games' were made clear by Orla McGetrick, Sarah Lough and Jennifer Purcell. 'The Secrets of Looking Beautiful 'were revealed by Sirina McKeogh, Aoife Martin and Carys Jones while 'The Causes and Problems of Global Warming' were revealed by Caroline Kinsella, Niamh Geoghegan and Grainne Connaughton.
'Phobias and Their Effects' were presented brilliantly by Bisola Salaja, Bairbre O’Dwyer and Charlotte Weever. 'The Simplicity of Dancing Your Radiators Warm' was demonstrated by Bronte Fitzmaurice and Megan Hanlon while the differences between sharp and sweet apples were investigated by Gertie O'Rourke and Hannah Casey.
A fantastic day was had by all competitors, new friends were made, facebook addresses swapped and, most importantly of all, the judges were impressed. Our Lady's Bower came away with a number of prizes, including best in the junior category for Hannah Casey and Gertie O'Rourke for their in depth investigation of 'All Apples, Sharp and Sweet' and overall award for best technology project for Bronte Fitzmaurice and Megan Hanlon. The girls competed in the senior category and demonstrated how the spring in your floorboards could generate under-floor heating in the home.Congrats to past pupil Cathy Brougham ( LC 2005) from Garnafailigh who has been selected as the Westmeath Rose 2010. Cathy studied Science in NUIG and is currently studying for a masters in toxicology between NUIG and AIT. Cathy impressed the judges with her bubbly personality and her interpretation of a classical piece on the flute. Best of luck in Tralee Cathy!

Every
Little Helps – Bower Girls
On February 12th, one month to the day after the Haitian earthquake, the students of 2U presented Sr Maria Hawkes with a wheelbarrow full of brown coins to the value of €1,562.
Sr. Maria is a sister in the LSU order who had been living in the Bower convent before heading off to Haiti last September to work in the LSU run Nutrition/Education centre on the island. On a visit to the school, she explained to the girls what it had been like to live through the earthquake and why she is determined to return to Haiti after a period of rest.
The brown coins, which are of very little value to us and are often thrown away like rubbish, will mean everything to the Haitian children at the LSU projects when converted to Haitian dollars. Three empty water dispensers were used to collect the coins in the school and families and friends willingly parted with long hoarded coins to realise the surprising amount of €1,562. Prizes were awarded to those who guessed the amount of coins in one dispenser, with Sarah Lough coming very close to the final figure.
The students and Sr. Maria would like to thank all who contributed and the Bower girls have pledged to help the Haitian victims on a long term basis. Already they have several fundraising ventures in the pipeline!
A Midsummer’sNight's Dream
Harry Smith has put together a modern version of this Shakespearean play to be the Bower entry in this year’s Briery Gap drama competition. The regional finals take place in Mullingar on Wed 27th Jan and the girls from Transition are hoping to go all the way. The Bower were national winners in this competition in 2003.
How Do You Solve a Problem like
Maria?
Find out at this year’s Transition show – The Sound of Music! Harry Smith and Ms Hopkins have put together a fantastic show, with everything from nuns to nazis! Tickets are on sale at the school and the show will run from the 2nd to the 4th Feb.

In the individual events team captain and Irish International Emma Fahy won gold, while first years Niamh and Maebh won silver. The girls will compete in the National Finals in February, in the Douglas pool in Cork. Good luck to all!

submitted their own original art work - including posters and multimedia
presentations - showing their creative and critical views on today’s main
issues in Africa, particularly those related to the environment.
Out of 1,128 entries, one winner and one runner-up for each country have
been selected. Helen Hughes and Caoimhe Greene, both 5th year
students in the Bower, represented Ireland at the competition.
The award ceremony was held in Strasbourg, France on 15 – 17 November. The national winners and their teachers will be rewarded with a trip to Africa, giving them a first-hand experience of European actions in the field. Our Lady’s Bower has recently celebrated its Arts Week for all pupils. It is the aim of the school that every girl should experience a week devoted to the Arts once in her school career. The Arts Week was first instituted in 1984, when the Sainte Union sisters celebrated their centenary in Athlone. This was the fifth such event and turned out to be a rich festival of Poetry, Sculpture, Music, Fashion, Crafts, Drama and Cinema
The Arts Week was a special occasion for all pupils- an opportunity given by the school to learn more about what is called "The Arts". Our Lady’s Bower is one of the few schools in the country to offer such an occasion to its students. They have had four such Arts Weeks before in the school; in 1984, 1990 and 1995 and 2000. Each time they were weeks to remember for the girls.
Our Lady’s Bower has a long and well-deserved reputation for excellence in the fields of Art, Literature and Music. Through past pupils and staff, many links with writers and artists have been possible and the invited participants include many well-known speakers, artists, performers and exhibitors such as: Liam O’Maonlaí, Regina Nathan, Ciarán Mullooly, Don Conroy, Éanna Ní Lamhna, Niall de Burca, Gearóid O’Brien, Michael Casey and Leo Mahon to name a few. The week started with a rousing recital from the Western Command Pipe Band for the whole school in the new gym.
Highlights of the week, according to the students, were storytellers Niall de Burca and Paddy Slattery, musicians Liam O Maonlaí, the Young European Strings Orchestra, Ciaran Mulooly of RTÉ, Artscope Percussion from Sligo, artist Ethna Brogan from Belfast, writer Kate Kerrigan and many other workshop presenters.
Local contributers to Arts Week 08 included the following personalities: Vera Hughes, Desmond Egan, Frankie Keena, Joe Ducke of Passionfruit Theatre, Maria Mahon,Tadgh Carey, Fiona McGinty, Maggie Dolan, Vanessa Van Denbulck, Gráinne Monaghan, Brian O’Ruairc , A.I.T.,Darina Ganly, Imelda Greraghty, Michelle Lynch, Jennie Hoo, artist Robbie Ryan and others. Many present and former staff members used their skills and expertise to give talks and workshops during the week. One such was a one-woman play performed by Margaret Hogan, now living in Galway. An exhibition of photographs by Aoibhinn Ní Chonchubair enlivened the walls of the new building. Science Magic by Randle Henly and a talk by Patricia Kieran, U.C.D., as well as a Forensics workshop kept many students enthralled.
All students experienced some hands-on art activities such as felt-making, silk collage and embroidery, chocolate and butter sculpting. They also were given the chance to act, sing and make music. Many got the chance to juggle and to make balloons, walk on stilts and paint faces. The IFT mobile cinema brought films to the Bower, and the week was brought to a close by a table quiz for all in the school gym. This was only the second occasion in recent times that the entire school population was brought under the one roof, as the new building was formally opened only last week
Congratulations!
Congratulations! Congratulations!

Bower Girls win Trocaire Prize at YSI Awards
A team of Transition students from Our Lady’s Bower has been awarded the Trocaire One World prize at the Young Social Innovators final in the RDS recently. Their project “Fair Play” aimed to replace all footballs and basketballs used in schools with Fairtrade, ethically produced balls.
While researching the issue they were horrified to discover the injustice of paying a child in Asia 15c to make a ball for multi-national corporations to sell at €90. The girls visited all the schools in the local area and got a very positive response from principals.
The St. Francis football club are already using the Fairtrade footballs and have already re-ordered them for next year. The Bower girls are hoping that other clubs and sporting suppliers will change over too.

final, held in the Radisson Hotel, Cork Airport on Saturday, March 8th, was
attended by contestants from throughout the Republic of Ireland and club
members.
Rebecca - speaking on the topic "Men and Women - Equal at Last!!" - progressed through the local and regional stages to national finals. She will join the winner from Northern Ireland at the annual AGM of Soroptimists Ireland for their convention in Bray in May, when she will again present her speech.
The
contest included an impromptu speech of two minutes preparation on

The swimming team from Our Lady’s Bower had a very successful weekend at the All-Ireland Swimming Championships held at the Leisureland pool in Galway on the 2nd and 3rd February. The senior freestyle relay team of Jacqueline Mooney, Aoife Corry, Emma Fahey and Naomi Mullins won gold, setting a new Irish record. The Intermediate medley relay team – Naomi Mullins, Emma Fahey, Aine Mooney and Aoife Corry- swam strongly to take silver. In recognition of their talent, Jacqueline Mooney and Aoife Corry were selected to represent Ireland in the International Schools finals in England on the 8th March. This will be Westmeath Sportstar Jacqueline’s 4th school cap and young Aoife’s 3rd.
Caoimhe King, a transition year student at Our Lady’s Bower, continued her recent winning streak at the Scottish Athletics Indoor Championships held last weekend in Glasgow. Caoimhe came first in the Triple Jump and third in the High Jump clearing 1 metre 65. She won equivalent titles in the Woodies DIY Junior Championships in Nenagh recently, and won bronze in the Triple Jump with a jump of 11 metres 42 at the British National Championships held two weeks ago in Birmingham.
This is an outstanding achievement for a very talented athlete who is very quick to attribute her success to the commitment of her coaches. At weekends Caoimhe is coached by Ernie Deacy of Westport AC, while during the week, she trains at the Athlone Institute of Technology with Sandra Ui Cathain and Mary Burgoyne of Roscommon AC .
Caoimhe is currently in training for the Connacht Championships which will take place in three weeks time, and ultimately for the last event of the indoor season, the All-Ireland Juvenile Championships two weeks later.

Caoimhe’s topic was the suffering caused by human trafficking.
With four other schools participating, competition was stiff but the Bower girls were announced as clear winners by former FG TD Paul McGrath, chairman of the judging panel. They go on to represent their county in the regional finals in Navan on 14th December.
