Four TYs entered this year’s Young Chef Competition in the hopes of making it through to the Athlone Rotary Finals. The girls took time out from their busy rehearsal schedule for this year’s school musical production of Grease to participate in the competition. They each devised three-courses and had two hours to prepare and present their meals.

Alexia Kimmel prepared bruschetta, salmon with tender-stem broccoli and rice, followed by tiramisu. Elaine McGovern presented leek and potato soup, chicken paprika with pasta and a strawberry cheesecake to finish. Grace McGorisk served Portobello mushrooms with baked goat’s cheese, served with rocket and tomato salad, sticky lemon chicken with champ and sugar snap peas, followed by strawberry and almond crumble. Niamh Murray started with sage and lemon sweet potato wedges, honey and garlic chicken stir-fry, with berry ripple yogurt for dessert.

Each of the offerings read like a Michelin starred menu and the smells wafting from the kitchen during cook time certainly had passers-by wishing they were at the judges’ table. However, it was not an envious role. As each of the girls plated up, the Home Economics teachers knew they would have a difficult task to select just two finalists.

Congratulations to Elaine and Grace, who were named joint winners and will now progress to the final, to be held on Saturday, February 29th. We are sure they will have many willing taste testers between now and then as they fine-tune their recipes.
