Sarah KilmartinWe were so proud to welcome Bower girl Sarah Kilmartin back to the school on Wednesday, March 27th. Sarah was greeted by Principal, Mr. Noel Casey, who gave hearty congratulations on her recent gold medal success, representing Team Ireland at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi.

Our Olympian entered the gym to deafening cheers and rapturous applause as students and staff had gathered for a whole school assembly to share in the celebrations. Sarah spoke with the students and described her joy at representing Ireland on the Basketball court, beating four teams to reach the finals, where she and her teammates faced and overcame India (27-15) to take gold.

She explained how the whole team put their heart and soul into the game, knowing that they would come away with a medal either way. It was her first time travelling to compete in the World Games, however she is no stranger to competition. She has competed in aquatics, athletics, floorball and basketball at both a regional and national level with the Athlone Special Olympics Club. She explained how she has only been playing basketball for two years and urged the students to put hard work and determination into all of their endeavours in order to succeed.

Sarah was then presented with flowers and a small gift by First Year and fellow basketballer, Jillian Begley. She is an inspiration to all in OLB and we thank her for coming back to speak with us about her journey.
