SciFest@AIT Leah ShawOn Friday, April 12th twenty Bower projects went under the microscope at the annual SciFest@AIT competition. Our girls were among 400 students from 24 midlands schools taking part in the STEM event. A huge amount of work had been done in preparation with the individuals and teams building on the success of our SciFest@school competition held in the Bower in March.

The Bower entries won a fantastic 17 awards on the day, including Best SciFest@AIT Veena and ChloeOverall School for the 3rd year in a row. Cristina Muriel took 1st place in Sport Science with “Exercise – A Menu for Success. Shauna Scullion came 3rd in Life Science (Individual) with “Nature’s Way”. Hannah Duffy and Niamh Jordan came 2nd in Junior Life Science with “Irish Heather Honey Means Buzzness – Move over Manuka”. They were also named Best Communicators. Mollie McDonnell, Eimear Gillen and Jessica Collins came 3rd in Junior Life Science with “Bio Gum”. Hannah Lennon, Eimear Galvin and Millie O’Brien came 1st in Junior Technology and 1st in Animal Health with “Code Red”. They also won Best Display. Orla Cuffe, Ivana Devery, and Áine Cassidy came 3rd in Healthy Science with “Can Holly make your Farm Jolly”. Veena 57034757_1241720662654724_9157818590966054912_nDandu and Chloe O’Rourke Harris won the Discover Space Award with “Asteroid Mining – The New Solution”. Their teacher, Ms Greaney won the Discover Space Teacher Award. Aoife McDermott and Aishling McCarthy came 2nd in the Health and Safety category with “Track that Crash”. Leah Shaw came 1st in the Senior Life Science category. She also won the Environmental Award and Display Award with “Citrus Fruits – A Global Answer to Droughts”. Chloe Gavin and Zanib Khan came 3rd in Intermediate Life Science with “Is Veganism Truly Virtuous?”. Finally, Kate Duffy and Isabelle Clarke won 1st place in Senior Life Science (Group) with “Sphagnum: A Super Solution for Superbugs?”.
