Second A hockeyThe second year A hockey team took on old rivals the Jez from Galway at the Athlone Regional Sports Centre on Thursday, 22 February in what turned out to be a hard fought 2-1 victory for the Athlone girls.

Both teams started strongly but the Bower girls were unlucky when the Galway team scored early, boosting their confidence and raising the level of play. The local girls fought bravely but didn’t manage to equalise in the first half. An unfortunate wild swing by the opposition resulted in a shoulder injury for Eva Fitzpatrick who nonetheless completed the match.

Re-energised by a half-time pep talk from coach Gudge Moran the Bower girls started the second half passing well and creating goal opportunities. Finally, Róisín Ní Dhuibhir scored from a quick pass from Eva Fitzpatrick, thereby levelling the match.

Playing with more confidence forwards Ava Shortall and Eva continued to fight and a free resulted in a near miss.  Eventually the winning goal came from Elizabeth Fitzpatrick who dribbled solo into the goal area, leaping over the goalie to score the winning shot.
