Rowing Champions

Well done to the Bower rowers Claire Lemass, Eimear O’Brien, Dervla Ganly, Jennifer Larkin and Molly Larkin who participated in the Irish time trials in the National Rowing Centre in Cork on Friday, 7 October.

Rowing Ireland held a coaching workshop in the Bower fitness suite at the end of September for TY students. The ten participants – Celine Doyle, Leanne Browne, Ciara Rushe, Aine Ní Leochain, Dervla Ganly, Aoife Hanley, Katie Larkin, Alyson Hughes, Blanca Benitez and Lucia Pineda – coached first and second years during PE class.

The Irish Indoor Rowing Championships took place at the University of Limerick on 21 January. Our Lady’s Bower was represented by cousins Ella Dillon and Molly Larkin, who had won silver last year at this event.

Ella was very happy with her thirteenth place overall but poor Molly had to abandon her race due to illness. However, the presence of the O’Donovan brothers at the event where Paul set a new Irish record for the lightweight 2000m race somewhat compensated for her disappointment as the girls got a photo with the lads!

Congratulations to the J15 quad winners who emerged as All Ireland champions at the National Schools Regatta in Limerick during the Easter holidays. Molly Larkin, Aobh O’Brien, Ella Dillon, Niamh Tallon and Cox Dervla Ganly have been training hard for this and were delighted with their win.

Soccer – Another International Call up for Carla McManus

Transition year student Carla McManus has been heavily involved with the U17 Irish soccer squad this year, helping them to qualification for the EUFA finals in the Czech Republic this May and earning her a nomination for the FAI Player of the Year in her age group.

It is not a new experience for the talented player – Carla played her first international match against Wales last April 2016 in Wales with the U16 squad. She had been scouted at a tournament in Limerick where she had scored an impressive thirteen goals, marking her out as a top goal scorer that early. She travelled with the Ireland team to Buk in Hungary in May 2016 for the round robin tournament.  They won their first match 2-0 against Slovakia with Carla scoring her first international goal in the last few minutes of the game.  They went on to beat the other teams involved to win the tournament, Carla scoring her second international goal on the final day against Hungary.

In August, Carla was called up to the U17 Republic of Ireland squad after her performance in Hungary.  They travelled to Finland for friendlies in preparation for the UEFA Elite Qualifiers which took place in Cork in October 2016.  In this tournament Carla scored five international goals helping Ireland secure a top spot in this group after playing Iceland, Belarus and the Faroe Islands. She had a hat trick against the Faroe Islands and was top goal scorer out of all the countries in that tournament.

Carla played recently against the senior Australian team in the AUL Complex in Dublin and scored a goal at this match with Ireland securing a draw against a tougher, older Australian squad.

On 13 February Carla travelled with the squad to Spain for friendly matches against Switzerland.  Then in March she travelled to Belgrade and it was the outcome of these matches that decided who will progress to the UEFA finals in the Czech Republic in May 2017.

The first hurdle will be the match against a very strong England squad followed by games against Norway and the Netherlands. The squad hopes to make the semi finals at least but it won’t be easy facing these teams. Carla’s parents will fly out to support her and the FAI website will provide details of their progression throughout the two weeks as this magazine will go to print before the tournament is over.

The amazing thing is that Carla has been able to combine a very tough training schedule with her studies. Although she was in transition year for this academic year, she combined her U16 schedule with studying for her Junior Cert! A very bright future awaits this exceptional forward and we look forward to her eventual selection for the senior team. We wish her and the team all the best in the EUFA finals.
