First Aid Training

collageTY students completed an intensive First Aid course during their first week back to school. The training was facilitated by OFA instructor, Garry Henneberry. The students gained essential life skills that can be used if ever needed at home, school and in the community. As part of the course, the girls acquired the knowledge necessary to deal with minor and major emergencies. Training covered the steps to be followed when dealing with burns, bleeding and concussion while also guiding the students through the procedures necessary when faced with more serious incidents such as stroke, asthma, heart and epileptic attacks. CPR training was also provided and the girls really enjoyed learning this indispensable know-how.

Forty TYs donned their wellies on Tuesday, September 18th and headed to Screggan for The National Ploughing Championships. They were very fortunate to attend the event on the opening day, which saw calm, dry weather conditions prevail. They got the opportunity to soak up the sights and smells which is no longer just for ploughing and machinery enthusiasts. They visited the food fair and craft village, saw the livestock and got to see and speak with the wide variety of exhibitors.

African Drumming and Hair Care

On Septecollagember 25th, the year group participated in a series of active workshops. The group rotated between three sessions, the first of which was a percussion workshop delivered by Dave Day from Jabba Jabba Jembe. This loud and lively workshop gave the girls the opportunity to have fun and enjoy drumming and creative music-making as a group. The second session, a ‘Rootine’ hair workshop, was facilitated by Anne Reilly, in which the girls learned general hair care and styling. To mark the upcoming Centenary of Armistice, the third session was a screening of ‘Testament of Youth’ – the biography of WWI Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse; Vera Brittain, who later became a writer, feminist and pacifist. Thank you to Anne and Dave for leading these events. The girls loved the hands-on learning that the activities provided.
