Transition year is a special option after Junior Cycle. It is a specific course of academic and vocational training which fully meets the criteria set down by the department of education and science. The programme is designed to cater for different aptitudes and abilities and offers each student an opportunity to experience a variety of practically and technically oriented subjects, as well as a number of sessions of work experience.
At its core is a strong emphasis on academic achievement and self discipline. Transition year represents an opportunity for students to mature, to make informed subject choices and to adapt to the independent study approach required for senior cycle.
Transition year teaches students to reason, to be
innovative and creative, to influence, to negotiate, to put plans into action.
New subjects are introduced for short modules which can stimulate self
directed learning and build confidence to achieve academic goals in senior
cycle.
The core subjects are: Religious Education, English, Gaeilge, Mathematics, French, German, Enterprise Studies, Physical Education, Communications, Computer Studies, Art, Craft and Design, and Health Education.
Subject taught in module form are: Science, Video Studies, Home Economics, Census Studies, Development Studies, Legal Studies, Public Speaking, Architecture Studies, Tourism, Music, Introduction to Psychology, Personal Development, Drama and History. These subjects are school-based, i.e. use the current expertise of the staff, and can vary over time.
Transition year offers a range of co-curricular activities designed to aid in developing maturity and self-confidence, also awareness of others. These include: community service, language exchanges and homestays, participation in the school musical, drama and Gaisce, the President's award. Work experience is an integral part of the TY programme, as is a residential outdoor adventure sports course. Our girls have taken part in university science weeks, and can take time out of school to specialise in sports. In addition, students are encouraged to take part in competitions such as Young Scientists, Young Social Innovators, AIB Build-A-Bank, Young Entrepreneurs, Public-Speaking, etc.
Trips to museums and theatres are organised, along with
lectures and visits to Our Lady's Bower by specialists in many fields.
