The first U/16 team from Our Lady’s Bower to qualify for the All Ireland Play offs in quite some time, travelled to the parochial hall in Gurranabraher in Cork for this year’s three team tournament, with a place in the All Ireland Semi Finals at stake.

Game 1.

Our Lady’s Bower V Presentation Convent, Killarney.

The Bower got off to a good start, scoring the first 6 points unanswered and this settled them for the remainder of the game. A good spread of scores from Kenzi Francis, Georgia Munnelly, Hannah Dickie, Keeva Reid and Katie Boyle kept the visitors well in front and Pres. Killarney were playing catch up for the whole game. A steady performance from the Bower girls saw them win out comfortably, 54 points to 39.

Game 2.

Our Lady’s Bower V Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Blarney, Co Cork.

Scoil Mhuire had lost their first game to Pres, Killarney and so had to beat the Bower by more than 14 points to win the tournament. The hosts brought in their U/16 Irish international, Michelle Hylah, who had spent all of the first game sitting on the team bench, on crutches & wearing a surgical boot.

At six feet three inches tall, she would prove to be a major thorn in the side of the Bower girls.

It is testament to the Bower team that the host team felt it necessary to bring the big girl back for this game.

The game that followed proved that they had made the right choice.

Basket for basket and foul for foul it was tight all the way to the last few minutes, with neither side getting out in front by more than four points. The Bower were hanging on at the end but some outstanding outside shooting from Georgia Munnelly and Kenzi Francis kept the Bower in the game.

The relentless full court defence from Blarney eventually took its toll on the Bower and the host team got going for some great, fast paced, basketball. They pulled away and were worthy winners.

Final score: Scoil Mhuire, Blarney, 52. Our Lady’s Bower 36.
