Congratulations to 5th Year Clare Reidy, who has had a paper published in “Science” – the journal of the Irish Science Teachers’ Association (ISTA). Visualising Maths for Chemistry was Clare’s submission in last year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. It received great attention from Chemistry teachers from throughout the country, with many making a beeline for her stand in the RDS, after word had spread on Twitter.

Clare surveyed classmates’ understanding of chemical compounds, comparing the teaching method used in Singapore with that currently used in the Irish education system and was awarded 2nd place in the Intermediate Individual Social and Behavioural category for her work.

Clare has a keen interest in Science and Maths and received the Maths in Science Award at this year’s Scifect@College online regional STEM fair, for her project on the maths of epidemics. Lockdown saw her article “Virus Causes Maths to Spread” being published in the Sunday Business Post, as the winner of the Newsbrands Ireland Covid-19 Student Writing Competition. Clare worked with Dr John O’Donoghue, the Chemistry Education and Public Engagement Coordinator at Trinity College Dublin and the Royal Society of Chemistry in order to convert her project in to the published article.

Well done Clare. All in OLB are very proud of your achievements.
