The cross country Connacht finals took place in Calry GAA Park in Sligo on Tuesday, 7 February – a day blessed with beautiful spring sunshine.
First race was the 1500m minor and the three Bower qualifiers Róisín Ní Dhuibhir, Cara Fitzpatrick and Eva Fitzpatrick ran very well. Next was the junior 2000m where Aoife McDermott, Eabha Crehan and Jasmine Akwenute put in great performances with Aoife qualifying for the All Ireland finals in Belfast on 11 March thanks to her 14th place finish.
Unfortunately the fourth team member, Rebecca Lowe, could not compete due to a knee injury but is still glowing from getting an Olympic consideration time at the Long Course Swimming Championships in Bangor recently!
In the final race, the senior 2000m, all Bower competitors – Tierna Maguire, Ciara Mac Carthy, Ide Crehan, Eva McKiernan and Katie Higgins – were happy to complete the course, with teammate Aoife Greene qualifying for the All Ireland finals.
Many thanks to past pupil, Ciara Greene for her help on the day. Ciara has just headed to Australia where she will study science at a college in Melbourne. A member of the Irish triathlon team, Ciara hopes to become involved in athletics during her studies. We wish her all the best for the future.
