The Nicola Ward Trophy for public speaking, which took place on Tuesday, 19 May was won this year by first year Tara Flanagan with a very entertaining speech on the subject of ‘Heroes’. This was the 27th anniversary of the first competition, inaugurated in 1989 to commemorate a first year who died tragically.
The audience was treated to a fascinating collection of speeches which provoked philosophical, economic and political debate. Minahil Sarfraz was second with her take on ‘To Err is Human, to Forgive Divine’ while third placed Natasha Maimba explored the ubiquitous question – ‘Should Barbie Dolls Be Banned?’ All ten finalists rose to the occasion, making the final decision very difficult for adjudicators Mary Fox, Eamonn Higgins and Ethel Lydon. The event was organised by teacher of English Mr John McGuinness and his colleagues.
While the judges deliberated the school orchestra performed light entertainment, conducted by Gerry Lacey. A display of first year Cubist artwork adorned the walls.
Public speaking has long been an integral and cherished part of the curriculum in Our Lady’s Bower and has proven to be very beneficial in nurturing confidence, tolerance and courtesy.
