Well done to 3rd Year student Ilaria Manenti who was accepted on to this year’s Centre for Talented Youth, Ireland Summer Programme. This programme is for young people between the ages of 12 and 16 who show high academic ability. The programme runs for 3 weeks and is based on the DCU campus with classes taken at a university level. Ilaria took part in a talent search which assessed her mathematical and verbal reasoning ability. Based on her scores, she was eligible for the Humanities course and choose to study Law. As a result of COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s programme was delivered via Zoom. Each week Ilaria studied a different branch of Law. The first week allowed her to analyse high-profile cases such as that of OJ Simpson and Oscar Pistorius. The second week focused on Constitutional Law with knowledge being gained on articles of the Irish Constitution, the law-making process and the parliament. During the third week Ilaria took part in moot court and could put into practice all that she had previously learned by simulating a trial on her final day. Lectures, reading and analysis of academic papers and groupwork took place daily. However, there was also the opportunity to participate in other social activities such as table quizzes and craft projects. Ilaria thought it was a great experience and learned a lot, not just from an academic perspective, but also in relation to working with others and developing her public speaking and debating skills. She hopes to pursue a career as a Human Rights Lawyer. Well done Ilaria.
