CWFThe Community Wetlands Forum met on Saturday, February 2nd at Tyrrellspass Castle, to mark World Wetlands Day 2019. The CWF aim to support the protection, management and wise use of Ireland’s wetlands for sustainable communities, by providing a network for community wetland groups to share knowledge, ideas, research and best practice. The Forum invited 5th Years, Isabelle Clarke and Kate Duffy, two of our BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition finalists, to speak at the event and present their project “Sphagnum: A Super Solution for Superbugs”. The event entitled “Working Together and Sharing Knowledge” highlighted the important role of wetlands in respect to climate change. The girls were extremely honoured to be given the opportunity to share their research with the forum, alongside Dr Catherine O’Connell, CEO of the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and Dr Vincent Carragher from Trinity College, Dublin. The event concluded with an open discussion on how we as communities can play a role in the conservation and protection of wetlands and peatlands in Ireland. Thank you to the CWF for extending an invitation to our students and enabling them to participate in such a worthwhile event.
