It was all systems go in the Bower during Maths Week Ireland which ran from 15-19 October. Most students had the opportunity to participate in the Mangahigh Maths Challenges using laptops in class, although time did not allow us to maintain our excellent record set last year. Both transition year and first year students had their own table quizzes, with questions based on solving maths or logic problems. The winners of the first year quiz were Eimear O’Brien, Eleanor O’Dwyer, Lauren Mitchell and Eva McKiernan, while in TY the winners were Cathy Greene, Caroline Kinsella, Kirsten McCormack and Grainne Connaughton.

The Bower also had the chance to welcome Dr Mike Brennan to the school to talk to the students about mathematical art. Dr Brennan was on the Bower staff until the nineteen eighties, when he left to take up a lecturing position in mathematics in Waterford IT. Since then he has completed a doctorate in Bangor University, Wales, on mathematical aspects of early medieval  art, like the art of the Book of Kells and the carvings on the  Bealin and Clonmacnoise crosses.
He made this subject the basis of  his workshop
