unicef 3The school’s UNICEF group took over the UNICEF Ireland twitter account on 4 February, the first full day of campaigning for the upcoming general election. The girls posed some hard hitting questions on the subject of equality to some of Ireland’s politicians. Dr. James Reilly, Aodhán O’Ríordán, Micheál Martin, Eamon Ryan and Richard Boyd Barrett were asked about their views on topics such as direct provision, lowering the voting age,  emergency housing, unicef 2capping private rental prices, and access to 3rd level for those in accommodation centres.

Members of the group have been instrumental in compiling an election manifesto on the issues believed to be most important to young people in Ireland today. The manifesto can be downloaded at www.unicef.ie/itsaboutus . The UNICEF group are encouraging their classmates to involve themselves in the general election 2016 with issues such as climate change, youth unemployment and income inequality fundamentally affecting their generation’s future. The students of OLB are being encouraged to be ready when politicians come knocking at their door.
