TY students had very interesting presentations and talks during Science Week. Dr. Emma Feeney UCD Institute of Food and Health gave a very interesting talk on the notion of superfoods and advised the students to be cautious of the way certain expensive foods are marketed. She told the students that Superfood is a marketing term not a nutritionist’s term and that they should be wary of believing in the extraordinary properties
claimed for certain foods such as acai berries, kale and the like. The class also had a visit from Dr Fergus McAuliffe UCD and a number of his Ph D students in ICrag, (The Irish centre for Research in Applied Geosciences) who spoke of their career pathway in researching oil and gas exploration. The school is very grateful to Gillian Maunsell of the Midlands Science Festival committee who provided these talks for the students.
As usual Our Lady’s Bower had two teams competing in
the annual Irish Science Teachers Association quiz which is held in the Athlone Institute of Technology. Expectations were high as Our Lady’s Bower was fortunate enough to win first and second place last year. Nuala Commins, Hannah Ward and Lauren Hughes were very unlucky to lose out to Loreto Mullingar by one point, but were happy with their second place finish as the top five teams competed in the national final in Trinity College at the end of November where they finished ahead of Mullingar! A second team with Aisling Benson, Róisín Burke and Megan Higgins were not far off the top five scores either but lost out by one point! Well done girls and many thanks to all in AIT for organising the event every year.
