Congratulations to our team of TYs who have reached ‘ECO-Dens’ – the Semi-Final of ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards 2019. Team members include; Alana Broderick, Isabel Costello, Éabha Crehan, Marianna Doolan, Ciara Keenan Devlin, Faith Greene, Aoife McDermott, Ella Meares, Veena Pranavi Dandu and Olivia Riordan.
The team’s entry focuses on the promotion of the Greenway as a safe and clean place to walk. During their research, the girls surveyed the Greenway environment, photographing and cataloguing the flora to be found and carrying out sample tests on gasses present. They produced a poster on their findings which is now on display in the Athlone Town Library. The team hopes that their work will result in the local population utilising and appreciating the natural beauty of the Greenway and the benefits that this resource, with its abundance of wild flowers, can bring.
The ECO-Dens phase of the competition will take place on April 8th in NUIG. It will give the team the opportunity to explain more about their project during a 5 minute presentation to a panel of ECO-Experts and field some follow up questions. If successful, the girls will attend the Final Showcase & Awards Ceremony on May 23rd in the Convention Centre Dublin. We wish them every success.
